Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Head Start School Nursing Program


The Schools Outreach and Clinics Division of the Black Hawk County Health Department contracts with the Cedar Falls Community School District (nine schools and approximately 5,000 students), the Waterloo Community School District (18 buildings and approximately 10,000 students) and Tri-County Head Start (23 centers in four counties and approximately 800 children) to provide comprehensive school nursing services. The nursing model used to support students is comprised of a Program Manager, Registered Nurses and Health Assistants, who work under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

In Waterloo, there are three school-based health clinics (called Success Street) located at East High School, West High Schools and Carver Middle School. These clinics are staffed by a Program Manager, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and clerical staff. Services offered are comprehensive physicals, immunizations, sports physicals, mental health counseling in affiliation with Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health Center, pregnancy prevention education in affiliation with Allen Women’s Health Center, substance abuse/addictions counseling in affiliation with Pathways Behavioral Health.
