APPLYING FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE
If you want to get married in Iowa, you'll need a marriage license.
1. Marriages in Iowa are between 2 people who are 18 years of age and older, not already married to someone else, not closely related by blood or first cousins, and are legally competent to enter into civil contract.
2. To apply for a marriage license the couple intending to marry and one witness (someone that's acquainted with the couple and is 18 or older) must come into the Recorder's office and fill out an application. The applicants and witness must have a government issued photo I.D. The fee is $35.00 and must be paid at the time of the application. After a 3 day waiting period the marriage license can be picked up and the couple can marry in any county in Iowa.
3. If there are extenuating circumstances and applicants are unable to come into our office in person, the application can be printed off the website and completed and signed before a notary public. It can then be mailed to our office along with a copy of everyone's ID and the $35.00 fee. The license can then be picked up after the 3 day waiting period. WE WILL NOT MAIL THE LICENSE, IT MUST BE PICKED UP BY ONE OF THE MARRYING PARTIES.
